Mexico Announces New Pesos-Only Policy within the Country

Thursday September 16th, 2010

The Mexican Tourism Board (visitmexico.com) has confirmed that as of September 14, 2010, visitors travelling anywhere within Mexico will be required to use the Mexican Peso as the only form of cash currency. International credit cards will still be accepted as processing them is unaffected by this policy.
Canadian and American dollars will no longer be accepted within Mexico. If you are travelling to Mexico, it is recommended that you have pesos and/or valid credit cards with you.
With regards to guests exchanging money in hotels - There is a model by which some hotels may be certified by a bank and be able to exchange up 1500 USD (per month) into Mexican Pesos. This means guests will be permitted to exchange the American Dollar cash if the hotel has obtained the license to offer this service, however to avoid any problems in this area it is suggested that guests bring payment methods in advance.
